I've got money to blow, part deux

In anticipation of the retro-check, I'm off Ikea, Walmart, Lakeshore, and Office Depot to pick up a ton of "wants" for my classroom. I also treated myself to a few school clothes items and a new wallet. The rest is going into savings. How are you spending your retro check?

A new or new-to-me car. And maybe a new coat for outside recess duty.

I am a second year teacher with a master's degree so last year I made 45k. My retroactive bonus was just under 3k (after taxes) because I only had one year of pay building up and a relatively low salary. I am really curious, is there a veteran teacher out there with three years of retroactive pay with a salary much higher than mine that is willing to say how much their bonus was? I could do the math, it wouldn't be too hard to figure it out, but it'd be cool if someone wanted to say.

I've been in the system for eleven years (the last few with a masters). This big percentage point was last year, so my check was about 7,500 after taxes. The bigger the check, the bigger the taxes. By the way for anyone who has not done the retro before, the reason we are taxed so high is because the checks are taxed as if that is your typical paycheck, which puts us in a higher tax bracket for just that check. Sucks now, but we will get a good chunk back in April. I am confused about why they took union dues out, we pay per check , not a percentage like our retirement, so I don't know how they can justify taking it ut of the retro check

Might want to save some for IRS payments. Having a large retro check at years end will throw you into another tax bracket and many will probably owe the IRS. This is one advantage of not getting a raise for 3 years and getting it all in one lump sum.

I'm already in that other tax bracket. BTW, the federal tax withholding on my retro check was $6,000!! Let's all enjoy this money. We deserve it.

Dee,

Your last 3 posts have been about retro checks and describing your spending spree. Do you have any comments about how the year is going with your students. How was DC BAS if you teach that grade?

I've noted more than once that I'm teaching second grade. It couldn't be going better this year.
